J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics

The J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics was officially launched by the Chairman of Reuters, Niall FitzGerald KBE in 2005. With significant philanthropic support, this €16million project was the first of its type in Ireland focussing on the linkages between public policy, innovation and business success.

The School house four major Research Institutes, namely the Whitaker Institute for Innovation and Societal Change, Irish Centre for Social Gerontology, the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit and the Irish Centre for Rural Transformation and Sustainability

As the School of Business and Economics grows Galway University Foundation continues to raise funds to support its ambitious research agenda and to support students in their academic pursuits. Philanthropic support varies form travel bursaries supported by Deloitte to Access Scholarships through Fidelity Investments Ireland and school prizes such as the O'Cearbhaille Prize in economics and the David Heeron Prize in Marketing.

Support for programmes is also a priority so that the blend of academic excellence and industry experience can have our students work and life ready. PwC's gift allows the Skills of Life, Skills for Success and the Innovation, Creativity and Enterprise module to expand so that all B.Comm students have further access to teaching in Innovatiom, Entrepreneurship and core work skills for early career development.
