Sport Facilities

University of Galway recognises the important relationship between academic performance, health and wellbeing. Taking care of your physical and mental health is vital to cope with the demands of university life.

As part of its overall strategic plan, the university is creating programmes to support the general physical fitness and wellbeing of our campus community including students, staff and faculty as well as the extended Galway community.

With 47 active and vibrant sports clubs at University of Galway we are excited to fund the development of sporting facilities for elite as well as non-elite sport and community use.

We are proud of our elite athletes and have watched in awe at the success of our students and graduates at all levels of international competition. To attract, maintain and develop top talent in Galway we require facilities to match our ambition.

Watersports Centre

The University’s proposed Watersports Centre will provide a modern, spacious, sustainably-constructed home for the University’s water sports programmes. It will build on our already inpressive successes in rowing as well as providing for a wide range of other sports such as sailing, surfing, and kayaking.

Located in the heart of campus on the green adjacent to the Alice Perry Engineering building, plans for the Centre include a safe launch point onto the Corrib for the University water sports athletes and will form part of the University’s blueway and greenway plans to enhance the campus’s riverfront areas.

The Water Sports Centre is designed to build on the University’s success and reputation in rowing as well as providing for a range of other water sports. The Centre will also have a large gym area that will be available for community use.

Pitches

At University of Galway, we understand that sport is for all, not just elite athletes. By introducing flood lit 3G pitches to our campus we will add two thousand hours of sport capacity annually, greatly increasing the number of our people who can participate in year round outdoor activity.

The University is currently seeking planning permission to renovate / construct a number of 5G pitches for GAA sports programmes. The renovation includes creating all-weather pitches and adding flood lighting to extend the evening use of the pitches.
