Research Projects

University of Galway's research pillars are supported by 6 research institutes that enable the highest quality interdisciplinary research and facilitate extensive collaboration, nationally and internationally.

Galway University Foundation works closely with our university's research community to engage partners, identify and secure funding to further invest in research supports, systems, processes and infrastructure across the university. Current research projects supported by philantropy include:

Breast Cancer Research

Breast cancer accounts for the greatest number of cancers diagnosed and the greatest number of deaths from cancer in women in Ireland. Thanks to the support of our donors, research in breast cancer is changing the prognosis for women and men diagnosed with breast cancer.

Monies raised through Galway University Foundation, supported by The National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBRCI) funds a comprehensive breast cancer research programme based at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research at University of Galway. The Institute, located on the grounds of University Hospital Galway is a world-class research center dedicated to pioneering medical research.

The research team, in collaboration with universities and hospitals across the globe, focuses on the development and improvement of diagnostic techniques and treatment strategies, to drive real and measurable improvement in clinical outcomes for breast cancer patients.

Research activities and projects include:

•Translational research related to metastatic breast cancer; genetics to predict risk and treatment response; and biomarker discovery.
•Development of the Cancer Biobank to house tissue and blood samples crucial to research.
•Clinical research focused on cardio-oncology and how cancer therapy affects the heart; breast cancer imaging; and women’s health, including post treatment support and rehab.

Galway University Foundation acknowledges the tremendous support it receives from its donors for breast cancer research. With your help, we can positively impact the future for women in Ireland.

Institute of Health Discovery & Innovation

The misson of the Insititue of Health Discovery & Innovation Institute is to enhance both fundamental and applied understanding of diseases, while also facilitating the creation of innovative solutions for health.

By consolidating the university’s existing world-class expertise, the Institute covers a wide range of biomedical science and engineering research.

Moreover, it fosters new strategic research areas for the university, such as active implants, connected health, and smart connected devices.

Research-driven ideas and insights are crucial to the health and medical technology innovation pipeline, and this Institute will be pivotal in ensuring research excellence throughout this process.

The Institute for Heath Discovery and Innovation, in collaboration with the Institute for Clinical Trials at the University of Galway, mark a dedicated and consolidated approach to enable, facilitate, and empower exceptional researchers and research to thrive in the West of Ireland.

Institute of Clinical Trials

At the Institute for Clinical Trials at University of Galway, scientific and operational excellence guides the teams ambition to rapidly translate research into impact, which is inclusive, driven by need, and committed to enhancing global health.

The team brings together a wealth of expertise across multiple disciplines, ensuring the highest standards in clinical trial delivery.

By collaborating with academic, industry, and healthcare partners, the Insttute facilitates the rapid translation of evidence into practice, bridging the gap between research and real-world healthcare applications and a commitment to shape the future of healthcare through meaningful influence on policy, guidelines, and practice.

Through these efforts, we are driving positive change in healthcare both nationally and globally.

CÚRAM

Established in 2015, as a Science Foundation Ireland research centre, CÚRAM is now a world-leading Irish medical device research centre based on university campus.

The centre's research focuses on understanding and treating global chronic diseases, with the aim of being the 'go-to' centre for undertaking medical device research.

CÚRAM's key strength lies in it's ability to create unique, synergistic networks across academic, industry and clinical institutions.

Researchers focus on bioengineering approaches for repair and remodelling, improved drug delivery solutions, and superior medical implant designs to treat chronic diseases.

While led by University of Galway, CÚRAM’s partner institutes include; University College Cork (UCC), University College Dublin (UCD), the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University of Limerick (UL), Dublin City University (DCU), National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT),  Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) and Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin).

Curam also partners with local small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs), and multinational medical devices and pharmaceutical companies to increase employment in Ireland.

The successful collaborative partnerships established through our industry research programme indicate the significant value generated for industry through collaboration with CÚRAM.
